Read&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutnutrition.squarespace.com\/home\/2009\/9\/14\/dessert-how-i-love-thee.html\" style=\"color: #d13038; font-size: 12px; text-decoration: none;\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\/home\/2009\/9\/14\/dessert-how-i-love-thee.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Dessert: How I LOVE Thee<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0em;\"><em>Believe it or not, dessert is one of the most overlooked tools for teaching kids to eat right. &nbsp;You might even say\u2026a dessert a day keeps the doctor away!<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0em;\">You just have to change what you serve.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0em;\"><strong>Change what you serve for dessert and revolutionize your kids\u2019 eating habits.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0em;\">The problem with dessert isn\u2019t dessert, per se.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0em;\">I may be going out on a limb here, but I\u2019m going to assume that you are not ideologically opposed to the final course of the meal. &nbsp;Instead, what you\u2019re worried about is the quantity of crap your kids regularly consume.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0em;\"><em>But that\u2019s the nutrition perspective. Turn your attention to habits and you can see more of the problem.<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0em;\">I\u2019m not denying that most after-dinner delicacies are sugar-laden landmines, but that\u2019s not what makes dessert so lethal.&nbsp; Dessert is dangerous because it produces a bad family dynamic \u2014 think of it as the Dessert Dance: dessert makes kids gloss over the good stuff to get to the&nbsp;<em>good stuff<\/em>, and this, in turn, makes parents&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutnutrition.squarespace.com\/home\/2009\/10\/27\/wheelin-dealin-10-reasons-why-you-shouldnt-trade-peas-for-pi.html\" style=\"color: #d13038; font-size: 12px; text-decoration: none;\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutnutrition.squarespace.com\/home\/2009\/10\/27\/wheelin-dealin-10-reasons-why-you-shouldnt-trade-peas-for-pi.html\" rel=\"noopener\">push the peas<\/a>, do the<a href=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutnutrition.squarespace.com\/home\/2009\/9\/4\/the-2-more-bites-tango-how-you-can-take-the-lead.html\" style=\"color: #d13038; font-size: 12px; text-decoration: none;\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutnutrition.squarespace.com\/home\/2009\/9\/4\/the-2-more-bites-tango-how-you-can-take-the-lead.html\" rel=\"noopener\">two-more bites tango<\/a>, and otherwise beg, bribe and cajole their kids into eating more of the main meal.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0em;\">This kind of interaction is stressful and it sets up a struggle. What\u2019s more, it teaches kids to value dessert, not veggies; it teaches kids to eat dessert when they\u2019re already full; it makes them fight you for control over their eating.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0em;\"><em>The solution is to make dessert delicious, but not the usual confection.&nbsp; The key is to serve fruit.<\/em><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0em;\"><strong>Fruit neutralizes dessert. Takes it down a peg or two. Makes mealtimes manageable.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0em;\">Most parents know they have to restrain the role of dessert, but the tactic they use\u2014limiting how often it is offered\u2014makes matters worse. By banishing dessert (or temporarily exiling it) parents make it even more desirable.<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0em;\">Serving fruit preserves the pleasure of dessert\u2014your kids will still get excited about it\u2014but eliminates the problems. Here&#8217;s how:<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 0em;\"><strong>1)<\/strong>&nbsp;Your kids won\u2019t clamor for fruit dessert; kiwi just doesn\u2019t have the same appeal (or sway) as cake. That means your kids won\u2019t be tempted to forgo their real food for it, and they certainly won\u2019t beg, whine and wheedle their way to it.&nbsp; In turn, you won\u2019t be tempted to use dessert to get a few more bites of broccoli into your beauties.
